Commonly known as silver fillings, dental amalgam is made up of a mixture of mercury, silver, copper, tin, and in some cases, zinc. According to the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), all dental amalgams are 45-55% elemental mercury, which is toxic and recognized as a chemical of major concern due to its dangerous threat to one’s health. As mercury accumulates in the body, any amount of mercury taken into the body should be considered hazardous.
Dr. Kluge is pleased to advise that she follows the extensive safety recommendations developed by the IAOMT for the removal of existing dental mercury amalgam fillings using extensive protective measures during the procedure.
Our practice has a Swiss-made air cleaning system, which cleans the air by constantly drawing in polluted air and returning filtered air back into the room. It contains high-efficiency particulate filters, as well as substantial gas-phase filters for mercury vapours, disinfectants, and volatile organic compounds.
This system complements our protocol of using rubber dams, cutting in shanks, providing oxygen delivered via a nasal mask, using plenty of water, and special metal cutting burs during all amalgam procedures. Disposable items are replaced immediately after the amalgam restoration has been removed.
We recommend that you plan your treatment jointly with your healthcare practitioner so that the timing of events complements each other and does not interfere with results. Following our guidelines, in conjunction with a healthcare practitioner, will help you find the correct protocol that benefits you optimally.
